The Official Hirax Bio
We’re going to try to make this bio less torturous than most you receive. One page. Short and simple. For the people who don’t know who Hirax is welcome to the show. You’re a little late, the band started in the early 80s, went through a couple line-up changes, finally settling with this 1985 original line up featuring: Katon W DePena vocals, Gary Monardo bass, Johnny Tabares drums and Scott Owen guitar. After playing the Los Angeles and Orange County club circuit, and after traveling to areas like Arizona and San Francisco the band built up an incredibly big following. Playing along the likes of Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Possessed, DRI, Megadeth, Venom, Exciter, COC, Dayglo Abortions, Reagan Youth, Final Conflict, Excel, Dark Angel, Death Angel, Cryptic Slaughter, Dr Know, and many, many, many more bands in the underground world.
In the late 80s Hirax disbanded and had been silent for over a decade until early 2000. When the band’s vocalist Katon W DePena had been overwhelmed by mail from all over the world it was clear that Hirax had not been forgotten. In fact the band is more popular now than ever. As fate would have it somehow all the original members from Hirax have been reunited. Yes, they are all still alive but have not mellowed out…at all! All Hirax records released on Metal Blade Records (Raging Violence, 1985/Hate, Fear and Power, 1986/Not Dead Yet CD,1987) are out of print. Very rare. So good luck finding them. To all the tape traders world wide: thanks for keeping the spirit of Hirax alive! To all the fans world wide: thanks for all the support! It’s great to be back!

info : contains two out of three songs from the bands' (for a long time) final recording session in 1987, some time after which they disbanded. The third song recorded during this session ("Dying World") was released in 1997, ten years after its recording, on Pessimiser / Theologian Records under the title "Dying World (Shock)".
In 2001 all three songs from this session were re-released together on 10" / CD that also include the original version of "Bombs Of Death" released on Metal Masacre ?? I advise you to get it immediately if you don't have it yet !!

Info : die Platte enthält zwei von drei Stücken der (für lange Zeit) letzten Hirax Aufnahme - Session im Jahre 1987, nach der die Band auseinanderging. Der dritte im Rahmen dieser Session aufgenommene Song ("Dying World") wurde erst zehn Jahre später, im Jahre 1997, unter dem Titel "Dying World (Shock)" veröffentlicht durch das Label Pessimiser / Theologian Records.
Im Jahre 2001 wurden alle drei Stücke dieser Aufnahme-Session zusammen auf 10" / CD wiederveröffentlicht, zusammen mit der Original-Version des Stücks "Bombs Of Death", die ursprünglich auf Metal Masacre ?? veröffentlicht worden war.

info: Hirax are back! and along with a very few other bands (like Slayer) they have not wimped out but gotten even harder and even more intense. The only thing that I am missing is a guitar solo every now and then, that gives it so much more depth. Howver, this is a great (rather) new release and, at least the picture disc version of it, a lovely collector's item, too.

Info: Hirax sind zurück und eine der wenigen Bands (wie z.B. Slayer), die immer noch hart sind und nicht versuchen, "gefällige" (= beliebige) Musik zu machen. Mir persönlich fehlt einzig ein Gitarren - Solo hier und da, das der Sache gleich so viel mehr Tiefe geben würde. Wie auch immer, es handelt sich bei dieser Scheibe nicht nur um eine klasse neue Veröffentlichung sondern, zumindest, was die Pic-7" angeht, auch um ein tolles Sammlerstück.

info: To put it the incorrect yet nice way - with this 2001 release of all new songs Hirax are not only "back" as with their "El Diablo Negro" release but even "backer"... :-) Seriously, this is a great and super heavy new effort, that has, if I remember correctly even got a guitar solo in one of the songs! My personal experience with it is that it gets better and better, the more often you listen to it, until you are totally addicted. One of the songs ??? has a lovely ??? "ding dong intro" that even my 8 months old daughter Anouk loves (as she loves the rest of "Barrage Of Noise," by the way, to the sound of which she wildly moves her cute little feet???). Don't miss this !!

Info: Um es auf die zwar nicht ganz korrekte aber dennoch schöne Art zu sagen - mit dieser Veröffentlichung aus 2001 sind Hirax nicht nur "zurück," wie mit "El Diable Negro" bereits, sondern "zurücker" denn je... :-) Eine klasse und super - heftige Scheibe, auf der sich, wenn ich mich recht erinnere, sogar eines meine geliebten Gitarren - Solos befindet! Mir persönlich ging es so, daß, je mehr ich die Scheibe hörte, sie mir desto besser gefiel, bi sich schließlich vollkommen süchtig danach war. Eines der Stücke ??? hat ein wunderbar "verorgeltes" Spieluhren - Intro, das sogar meine achtmonatige Tochter Anouk liebt (wie auch den Rest von "Barrage Of Noise," zu dem sie - anstatt zu bangen oder pogen - wild mit ihren kleinen "Füßle" strampelt. Kaufen!

The entire "final" 1987 recording session, before Hirax broke up just to reunite in 1999?. Includes 3 super heavy and fast songs from said session plus, as a bonus, the original version of the song "Bombs Of Death" as released on Metal Masacre VI in 1984 (one of the fastest and heaviest songs available at the time!). Great to hear this effort witnessing yet another musical stage of the band around exceptional singer Katon, that never sounded the same on any of their follow-up releases (yet managed to still be great - something very few bands, especially metal bands, succeed in).

Die vollständige "letzte" Aufnahme - Session der Band aus dem Jahre 1987, wonach die Band dann irgendwann auseinanderging. Auf dieser Scheibe gibt es 3 super - heftige und - schnelle Stücke aus der besagten Aufnahme - Session sowie als Bonus die Original - Version vom 1984 auf Metal Masacre VI veröffentlichten Stück "Bombs Of Death" (seinerzeit übrigens eines der heftigsten und schnellsten Stücke, die es überhaupt gab). Schön, dieses Zeugnis einer weiteren musikalischen Phase der Band um Ausnahme - Sänger Katon zu hören, die auf jeder Scheibe irgendwie völlig anders aber dennoch immer gut klang bzw. klingt (auch dies gelingt, insbesondere im Metal - Sektor, im übrigen nur den wenigsten Bands).

info: 1987 recordings featuring Katon of HIRAX, Ron McGovney the original Metallica bassist, drummer Gene Hoglan of Dark Angel, Testament, Death and Strapping Young Lad - fame plus some other guys. I would very much liken the musical style of this band to Hirax at their best, at least with Katon singing, one could easily believe it's them! At times progressive yet most of the time hard speed / thrash metal with even some guitar solos, exactly as I love it and dearly miss it these days. Unfortunately there aren't too many good bands around these days. Being "monotonously hard" does not only seem to be a sign of the time but unfortunately also becomes more and more predominant in music these days. This CD contains the band's six song demo tape called "Wreckage" plus a nine song live performance recorded in Phoenix, AZ, (pretty good sound quality apart from maybe the first few seconds of the show). Buy !!!

Info: Aufnahmen aus dem Jahre 1987 mit Katon von Hirax am Gesang, dem ursprünglichen Metallica - Bassisten Ron McGoverny sowie am gewaltigen! Schlagzeug Gene Hoglan bekannt von Dark Angel, Testament, Death und Strapping Young Lad, außerdem noch ein paar weitere Jungs. Genialer zuweilen progressiver aber stets heftiger Speed / Thrash mit hier und da einem Gitarren - Solo, der sehr an Hirax zu ihren besten Zeiten erinnert. Angesichts Katons typischem Gesang jedenfalls könnte man sie leicht verwechseln. Musik, wie ich sie liebe und deren Art ich heute schmerzlich vermisse, leider gibt es gegenwärtig nicht sonderlich viele gute Bands von ähnlichem Kaliber. "Monotone Härte" scheint nicht nur ein Zeichen der Zeit zu sein sondern gibt leider auch musikalisch immer mehr den Ton an... Auf dieser CD enthalten ist ein 6-Song-Demo der Band namens "Wreckage" sowie eine 9-stückiges, mit Ausnahme der ersten paar Sekunden auch qualitativ recht gutes Konzert, aufgenommen in Phoenix, Arizona. Sofort kaufen !!!
